Chatham Islands Enterprise Trust Newsletter - May 2009

CHATHAM ISLANDS MANAGEMENT LIMITED
Trustees have spent a number of hours developing the Strategic Plan which is now in it's second draft, Directors are currently drafting the company plans, the Strategic Plan will be available to the public on 29 May 2009, a letter will be distributed by way of householder outlining the process undertaken to date, full copies of the plan will be available to the public by request, please phone the office.  A public consultation workshop will be held on Thursday 25 June 2009 in the Waitangi Hall, times will be advertised at a later date, Trustees will present the plan to the community and request feedback and other ideas, copies of the plan will also be available at the workshop.

Customers can now pay their accounts to our subsidiary companies by direct debit, please contact Denise Meo for the appropriate forms.

Trust Philosophy
We thank Val Croon for his feedback seeking clarification on recent wording changes as a result of our Philosophy review.

Trustees have considered the previous change made, and have agreed a further amendment is necessary, so the statement now reads:

(ii)    Business Activities of the Trust:

Not to compete in any area of commercial activity where a competitive and fairly priced service is provided by private entrepreneurs unless deemed to be in the best interest of the community.

The Trust Deed is a 24 page document, and is available by request from the Trust Office. The Trust Deed details the objectives and broad powers of the Trust. It is a signed legal document and cannot be easily changed. Of significant importance is the Trust Deeds inferred obligation on Trustees to; do all things within it's powers, to directly or indirectly benefit the Chatham Islands and it's community. There are no intended changes to the Trust Deed.

The Philosophy, however, is a single page resolution made by the Settlor Trustees to outline the Trust's intended business parameters. The current Trustees recognized a review of the Philosophy of 17 years was required, to enable the Trust to meet current community expectations.

Due to an overwhelming community mandate and the current economic climate, Trustees consider it timely to work more proactively to achieve outcomes required by the Deed that will benefit all Chatham Islanders. To this end, Trustees have resolved to, when necessary, invest in shipping, and to directly import diesel for CI Electricity and other users.

In order for the Trust to carry out these activities, the Philosophy needed review and change. This was carried out by resolution of Trustees, as is the required process.

We invite feedback on these changes.

Reminder:
Trustees of the Chatham Islands Enterprise Trust are calling for nominations for Directors on some of their subsidiary companies: Chatham Islands Airport/Ports Limited, Chatham Islands Electricity Limited and Chatham Islands Quota Holdings Limited.  The appropriate forms are available at the Trust Office.  Nominations close Friday 15th May at 4.00pm.

Council and Trust representatives will be meeting with Government Officials in Wellington on 4 June 2009 to discuss the $20 million Infrastructure fund, infrastructure assets, future developments and the need to fund those developments. We will keep the community informed of progress.

The "Baldur" has arrived.  We believe it to have a full load of stock back to New Zealand.  44 South Shipping Limited is a privately owned company and currently the Trust has no financial stake holding in the company.   Trustees will continue to monitor the shipping services of these islands.
