CHATHAM ISLANDS
ELECTRICITY LIMITED
As per the House Holder posted to all box holders regarding the
decrease in power prices, on reflection Directors enthusiasm to reduce power
prices was premature. CIEL will achieve
a loss this financial year. CIEL needs
to use the benefits of lower cost fuel to recover some of those losses made
earlier in the year. These losses
occurred when the company absorbed a 16 cent per unit cost in July 2008 with
fuel prices peaking at $1.93; 11 cents in August 2009 and 12 cents in September
2008. The unit price for electricity
will remain at 73 cents on 1st August 2009.
Fuel prices are starting to rise again but we are looking to hold
the current prices as long as possible.
If you have any queries regarding this please contact Ian McFarlane or
any of CIEL Directors.
CIEL are currently taking registers of interest for an Electrician
Apprenticeship, if you are interested please call our office.
Wind:
CBD officials visited the island last month and have started
completing the final plans for the installation of the two 200kw wind turbines.
There are two major issues that need to be dealt with, one involves
the capital depreciation on the wind turbines and the other on ways to increase
island demand. In essence the more demand there is the cheaper the delivered
power prices will be from the turbines. Chatham Islands Electricity Limited is
currently negotiating with Moana Pacific to see if they would help in this
matter.
