Chatham Islands Electricity Limited

Unfortunately the price of electricity has to increase by 5 cents per unit form 1 October 2009. The company has not recovered from significant losses incurred during the diesel prices spikes last year, and we have now found that a fuel meter became inaccurate during this period which has resulted in electricity being undercharged by the cost of 44,000 litres of fuel over the last 12 months. This increase does not put us in a profit position and prices will need to rise again if fuel costs increase. Although we have taken steps to ensure fuel supply at the lowest cost our exposure to diesel prices confirms the need to build more sustainable generation on the island.

Wind Update:
As most of you know we are in the last phases of completing the resource consents for the installation of two wind turbines which will be erected 1.7kl from the Owenga road on a ridge on the "Millennium track" through Alfred Preece's property.

The turbines were to be two 200kw turbines but these have now been up specked to 225kw - 275kw depending on the blades fitted-smaller diameter produces less power but are more robust- we are using 225kw blades for a start. These turbines are well proven on islands in cyclone conditions but we are being careful.

Once the resource consents are completed there will be a flurry of activity, erecting a spur line, an all weather road, and then building the foundations etc ready for the turbines themselves.
CBD, The Owners and installers, are hoping to have this installation running in the first ¼ of 2010.
Although this project will not drastically lower energy prices on the island it will future proof the island against reliance on diesel and when diesel prices rise as we are confident they will we will have energy from a renewable resource that will insulate us from these rises.

If you have any questions relating to this please feel free to contact Ian McFarlane.
