Report on review of Chatham Islands Enterprise Trust and Chatham Islands Council
Sep 04, 2009 at 10:41 AM

In 2008, the Chathams community discussed key issues for its future, following the third Taylor Baines report. Amongst the issues raised were the future roles for the Chatham lslands Council and the Chatham lslands Enterprise Trust. Concerns were expressed as to whether there was duplication of governance and administration, and whether their respective tasks were allocated to the body best able to undertake them.

Basil Morrison CNZM JP and Hugh Rennie CBE QC were asked by the Trust and the Council to review their current structures and operations, to consider ways in which there could be combined operations or a merger, and to set out our findings, options for action and recommendations. In particular they are asked to recommend ways forward for the Chathams to ensure the lslands have a sustainable future.

Morrison and Rennie issued a discussion document, invited and received submissions, consulted with the Trust, Council, lslands organisations and individuals, and considered current information on government commitments and proposals for the Chathams.

Their full report is available below.

NASA satellite captures phytoplankton bloom over Chatham Rise

An expansive bloom of phytoplankton (single-celled, plant-like organisms) traced colorful swirls across the South Pacific Ocean between New Zealand (left) and the Chatham Islands (right) on December 23, 2009. The colors come from chlorophyll and other pigments that the phytoplankton use to capture light for photosynthesis. The milky turquoise parts of the bloom may include phytoplankton called coccolithophores, which have a chalk-like plating that is very reflective.

Bogus email virus warning

There's an email currently being circulated which is allegedly from the Australian Federal Police and about a computer virus.  This is a fake and the warning itself is the "virus', and although a time waster is otherwise harmless.

Any virus warning to come through email is almost certainly a fake and should not be forwarded.  This particular one has been in circulation since 2006.
